There is no shortage of things to see and do in Wilmington, Lake Placid, and the surrounding areas!


Enjoy numerous waterfalls, lakes, mountains and rivers as well as hiking, biking, fishing, skiing, snowmobiling, swimming, boating, fall foliage, motorcycling, and area zip lining.  Or, head into Lake Placid and spend time shopping, dining, or taking an historic tour. 


There is something for everyone!  When the day is done, relax by the fire, or in the hot tub or sauna!

Wilmington Flume Falls, Wilmington, NY

Wilmington Flume Falls, Wilmington, NY:


The Flume Fall is a short loop trail located near Wilmington, New York that features waterfalls, a swimming hole along the Ausable River.  The trailhead to the Flume Falls network of trails is on one side of the street and the Falls itself is on the opposite side. Your leashed dog is welcome!

Santa's Workshop, near Wilmington, is a spectacular, fun-filled theme park for children ages 1 to 8 years old!  There are rides, stores, restaurants, animals, shows, and best of all, Santa himself. 



Whiteface Mountain Ski Resort, Wilmington, NY

Whiteface Mountain has Olympic Ski Trails, and in the Summer you can drive up the Olympic Highway and traverse the top of the mountain, they also have mountain biking trails and gondola rides.  Oktoberfest is held here annually!

Olympic Ski Jump, Lake Placid, NY

Ski jumps for Olympic Ski Jumping, Freestyle, and in the same complex, you can also go snow tubing. View the jumps the way the ski jumpers do by taking the elevator to the top. Also, you can watch the professional skiers jump over the July 4th weekend and Christmas and New Years Holiday week.




Lake Everest, Wilmington, NY

Lake Everest is on Rte 86 in the quaint town of Wilmington, NY.  It has a sandy beach, picnic area, a short hiking trail, fishing platform.  In Summer you can rent kayaks, aqua bikes, and paddleboards.  


Other activities include volleyball, playground, public restrooms, and on Thursday evenings in July and August, come enjoy free outdoor concerts!

High Falls Gorge, Wilmington, NY:


The Ausable river forged a deep gorge over millions of years. The owners built a wooden pathway alongside a scenic pathway for you to observe the many spectacular waterfalls.




Bob Sled at Mt Van Hoevenberg, NY

Mount Van Hoevenberg, Lake Placid, NY:


Zip down the track in the bobsled used by Olympic Athletes and travel at speeds up to 55 miles per hour around sharp turns (1/2 mile track).  You can also use the luge or skeleton, the only track on the east coast!


This is also a great place to go cross country skiing in the winter where the Olympic Athletes were during the 1980 Olympics.  In the summer, you can hike and go horseback riding.



Cliffside Coaster at Mt Van Hoevenberg, NY

Another exciting activity at Mt Van Hoevenberg is the Cliffside Coaster.  You can cruise down the track which parallels the 1980 bobsled track and you can control the speed.  It's the longest Mountain Coaster in the USA. 


Also at Mount Van Hoe is a huge climbing wall.  



Ausable Chasm, NY

Don't miss this amazing river gorge with beautiful waterfalls.  They have a trail that runs alongside the gorge with overlooks to use for viewing the scenic rock formations.  Also, you can raft down the river or do some rock climbing, rappelling, and other adventures.



Mountain Biker

Hardy Rd Mountain Bike Trail, Wilmington, NY 


The trail is 11 miles in length.  It is dryer than most of the other trails and has views of Whiteface Mountain. 


To get there, from Route 86 heading towards Jay, Hardy Rd is on the right.  Stay on Hardy for about  2.2 miles to the Wilmington Wild Forest, access the Beaver Brook Tract Trail System AKA Hardy Road Trails on your left.


There's also the Flume Trail  6 to 9 miles depending on the route taken. 


Both trails are close to all of our homes!



Toboggan in Lake Placid

For great winter fun, take your family tobogganing in Lake Placid from this 30-foot high chute.  It sends you onto ice-covered Mirror Lake. 


Normally open late December, January, and February,  depending on weather and ice. 


The chute is located behind the Lake Placid Post Office, on Mirror Lake.



Ausable River, Wilmington, NY

Ausable River Fly Fishing, Wilmington, NY 


All along Rte 86 heading into Wilmington from Lake Placid, you will find many fly fishermen in the Spring and Fall.  They have waders on and fish all day, regardless of the weather.  It is a catch and release system, but you will see many birds such as Osprey and Herons who didn't get the memo!


Also, if you are a fisherman, there is landlocked Salmon that you can keep in the lake across from the Saranac Lake Hospital (Saranac Lake is the town next to Lake Placid).

Saranac Lake has an annual Winter Carnival every February, weather permitting, with an Ice Castle for all to marvel at and enjoy.  


The Carnival is a 10-day event filled with family-friendly events, assorted bands performing nightly, a parade, games, exhibits, and so much more!

There are hundreds of well-maintained trails in the High Peaks of the Adirondacks available to hike.   Be sure to add your name to the entrance of the trail and log in when you returned.  That way the rangers know you returned safely.   


Trails are rated on the level of difficulty.  Wear appropriate hiking boots, take GPS, food/snacks, and don't leave anything behind.  Leashed dogs are welcome!

On Tuesday nights each Summer, enjoy free outdoor concerts at Mirror Lake.  Various bands and the Sinfonietta also perform at the Lake.
